5th Grade
I grew up in Newton, KS and graduated from Newton High School.
I attended Fort Hays State University and earned a Bachelors Degree in Psychology. After graduating, I taught and worked with autistic children at the Institute of Logopedics in Wichita, KS. This is when I decided I wanted to become a teacher.
I went back to school at Emporia State Univeristy and earned a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education.
After teaching for several years, I again went back to Emporia State University and earned a Masters Degree in Education.
I have been teaching at Burlington Middle School for most of my career. I taught 6th grade Language Arts and Reading for 12 years. When the 5th grade moved up to the MIddle School in 2010, I switched rooms and started teaching 5th grade Science.
Besides Science, I also teach a section of Language Arts and Reading.
I started my teaching career in 1992 and taught one year at Dearing, Kansas. I taught K – 5 special education.
I moved to Burlington in 1993 and got a job as a part time Reading / Math Specialist and part time substitute aide.
In 1994, I started teaching at the Middle School and have been teaching here since then.
I married Mark Engel in 1993 and we have lived in Burlington all of our married lives. Mark teaches high school physics and chemistry.
We have three children :
As a family, our favorite things to do in the summer are to go camping and boating. We love being at the lake.
In the summers, I enjoy gardening, cooking, and reading good books.
During the school year, I am also a middle school volleyball coach, so I enjoy going to volleyball games. We also enjoy watching K-State volleyball and football games when we get a chance.
